The Congregation of Saint Saviour

at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, NYC

Every week, the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine hosts hundreds of visitors, tourists, seekers and friends from all over the world.   People are drawn to the magnificent architecture, inspiring music, beautiful artwork and powerful liturgies.  They may also attend cultural and artistic events, public conversations about important issues, baptisms, confirmations, ordinations, weddings and funerals.  Sometimes, after they have attended a few events, they find that they would like to call this place home.

The Congregation of Saint Saviour, formed in 1992, is its own non-profit corporation that functions as the congregation in the Cathedral, which is the Mother Church of the Episcopal Diocese of New York.  We have elected lay wardens and vestry, and a vicar appointed by the Dean of the Cathedral.  The Congregation includes people who live in the neighborhood or city, have recently moved here for study or work, commute from near-by towns and states or who live far away and simply want to have their spiritual roots in this place.  We welcome them all.

The Congregation supports a variety of programs in response to our calling to be faithful witnesses to Christ's love and to support the mission and ministry of the Cathedral.   We provide pastoral care, spiritual formation, education, outreach and hospitality with programming that includes Eucharistic visitors and ministers, a prayer tree, healing ministry, retreats, the Order of Urban Missioners, Via Media, Education for Ministry, confirmation and Bibles classes, environmental programs, Children's Abbey Sunday school, the Manhattan North Inter-Parish Council, a welcome table, receptions and outings.  The Congregation also supports the Diocesan Carpenter's Kids Program for HIV/AIDS orphans in Tanzania with our member Elizabeth Boe currently on their staff.  Funding comes from pledged contributions directed to the Congregation of Saint Saviour, as well as special events, such as the Crafts Fair in December.

If you would like to join or simply find out more about the congregation, please contact Christian DeRuiter at office@saintsaviour.org or our Vicar, Canon Victoria Sirota at vicar@saintsaviour.org.  Our website is www.saintsaviour.org.  We look forward to meeting you!
