Feast of the Epiphany

O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son
to the Peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by
faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to
face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.            Collect for the Epiphany (BCP 214)

Dear Cathedral friends and Congregation,

Twelve or thirteen years ago, I started working in a church, and part of my responsibilities was to take part in the Epiphany pageant. I still remember it well - one person was a the front of the church reading the story of all the different people journeying to the christ child... the shepherds, the animals, the wise men, and in this particular case, a batman and a lobster (two children insistent to claim their own costumes). On this particular night, the journey did not go as planned. The children needed to only go from point A to B, but in a flash, dispute broke out if the shepherds or kings/wisemen go first, so Batman and the lobster took the initiative, leading the way as well as a bit of a brawl.

More than the kings or the wisemen or gentle singing of hymns while holding a candle, that is the image that comes to mind on this night. The baby Christ came into the world so bright for all to see and come forth. It's both fantastic and altogether messy humanity at the same time. It was a chance to see the divine, experience the divine, and partake of the divine but still require the call of humanity to show up - in whatever form they are, be transform, transform others, and join the in divine process through their lives and well after.

This Sunday, we see that in full form - with the Baptism of some children and adults followed by the Second Sunday celebration in Cathedral House. I hope you all can attend.

I hope you all had a fabulous Christmas and wonderful New Year. I also pray that you have an Epiphany and season after filled with the light of Christ and the ever continuing journey with and toward it.

In the meanwhile, you have my prayers.
Mary

P.S. As a heads up, I will be away from the office most of the next two weeks, beginning January 9th until the 23rd completing some writing for my doctorate. Chanmi will be in the office, and I can be reached in the case of any emergency.
