Canon Lee

We are excited to welcome to the Cathedral the following preachers in the coming months:

October 22, 2023 - The Rev. Richard Witt, Executive Director, Rural and Migrant Ministry (RMM). Several weeks ago, President Bill Clinton spotlighted RMM's pioneering initiative with the New York Episcopal Federal Credit Union to establish financial equity among migrants and rural, farmworking families.

October 29, 2023 - Sister Monica Clare, Sister Superior of the Community of St. John Baptist and viral TikTok star.

November 12, 2023 - The Very Rev. James Harlan, Dean, The American Cathedral in Paris.

November 19, 2023 - The Rev. Mark Nestlehutt, President and Executive Director, Seamen's Church Institute.

December 17, 2023 - The Rev. Dr. John Chryssavgis, Archdeacon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and Executive Director, Huffington Ecumenical Institute at Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology.

December 31, 2023 - The Most Rev. Étienne Vetö, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Reims, France.

February 11, 2024 - The Rev. Canon Ranjit K. Mathews, Canon to the Ordinary, The Episcopal Church in Connecticut.

April 28, 2024 - The Very Rev. David Monteith, Dean, Canterbury Cathedral.

Over one hundred years ago, our Cathedral was chartered to be an "instrument of Church Unity." The distinguished Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Anglican clerics who will preach at the Cathedral are another sign we are living afresh into this mission.

The Rev. Canon Steven Lee
Vicar

FIND YOUR SEAT AT THE CATHEDRAL

At every event and service, there is a seat for everyone at the Cathedral.

This spring, we will receive 2,000 new chairs that we will use when we gather.

We invite our community to name these chairs in honor of family members, friends, beloved church leaders, or even pets. For each gift of $250, we will engrave a plaque with your chosen name(s) that will be placed on the back of each chair beneath a beautiful etching of our historic rose window! The Cathedral is a treasured gathering place for the City, and these beautiful new chairs will be a gift to our  vibrant community.

CONGREGATION FALL RETREAT AT HOLY CROSS

October 27-29, 2023

“Fall Triduum” led by Brother Robert Sevensky

The Fall Triduum refers to the three days that come during the week following our retreat weekend: Halloween, All Saints and All Souls and mirrors in a way the Spring or Easter Triduum, though in a minor key.  We will explore the rich religious and folk history as well as the music and art surrounding these days: What does the Fall Triduum represent to us and how does it impact us even--perhaps especially--today?  There is a mystical spirituality latent in this period that has its own power and excitement.

Congregation Column

Bob Deming on the first Dialogue on Divinity:

Before the Investiture of the First Community at the Crossing, I reflected in this space on the creation of the Community of the Crossing. The problem is that I got the name wrong. The correct name is Community at the Crossing. I like even better this name with “at” as the joining word: implied are both spatial and temporal elements. Young people are at an important crossing, within the Cathedral and, probably, in their life.

The Community at the Crossing invites people to come this Monday evening to the Cathedral at 6:30 PM for a panel discussion, “Dialogues on Divinity: David Ford.” Professor Ford is the author of The Gospel of John: A Theological Commentary. This event is announced above in upcoming events. The reason I also bring attention is that I want to express appreciation that the wider community is included in some of the Community at the Crossing’s educational opportunities. Even though I am not sure that I will be able to attend on Monday evening, I greatly appreciate the option.

Young Adults of Saint Saviour Bible Study (Meets once a month)

All members of the Cathedral Community and Congregation in their 20s and 30s are invited to a Bible study hosted by the Young Adults of Saint Saviour. Last month we discussed the beginning of Jesus’ ministry and his call for us to change our hearts.
Immediately after the service, we gather in the nave during coffee hour and walk over to the Chapel of Saint James in the Cathedral.

No preparation or prior Bible study experience is necessary. All young adults are welcome!

NEWS FROM THE CONGREGATION

The Weekly Sunday Hospitality continues.

Research shows that the more you give the more you get. The more you help, the more invested you become in your church and the more it feeds you. Isn’t that amazing? Do you enjoy the coffee and the treats--the time together every week for conversation and welcoming of visitors? To keep this ministry going we need to expand the number of people involved. If you are on the list of helpers and providers of snacks, THANK YOU! If you haven’t volunteered yet— why not join the team? There is nothing exclusive about it. All are welcome to help out. If you can come once a month or every 6 -8 weeks to set up before the service and clean-up after the coffee hour, please contact Marsha Ra or Sue Sobolewski. Or talk to us on any Sunday. We will get you started on this ministry.
